IFRS Masterclasses: Emerging Markets

In 2009 and 2010, Shan ran several IFRS masterclasses for companies going through the transition to IFRS.  These included a 5-day course for pension fund managers in Lagos and a 2-day update focusing on finanacial instruments in Kuala Lumpur.  Shan has also run 2-day transition courses for delegates in Mumbai and presented at the Bombay stock exchange.  Shan has run IFRS transition courses in Dubai for the UAE and other Middle Eastern delegates.

Shan will be presenting a specialist 5-day course covering financial instruments, acquisitions and deferred tax to the Turkish Capital Markets Board, in Ankara in March 2011.

Exercises for the UK regulator, the Financial Reporting Council

In 2009, Shan was engaged by the FRC, www.frc.org.uk, to research and draft its report "Accounting for Acquisitions", issued in January 2010.  This involved reviewing IFRS 3 compliance by 20 UK companies that had undertaken material acquisitions.   The report, available on the FRC website, provides practical assistance to companies dealing with the accounting and valuation aspects of IFRS 3 and IAS 38.

In 2010, Shan performed a similar exercise for the FRC reviewing the application of IFRS 2 by 30 UK companies with significant share option schemes.  The resulting report, which will provide practical guidance on IFRS 2 compliance, is expected to be issued early in 2011.

Practical Workshops Addressing IFRS Reporting of Goodwill and Intangible Assets

Shan has developed a workshop, which can be run for a full or half-day, including a case study on how to apply the requirements of IFRS 3and IAS 38, to identify and value intangible assets arising from an acquisition.  The case study also includes application of the IAS 36 impairment test in respect of goodwill and identifiable intangible assets.  Participants work through the case study using their own laptops.

IFRS Training in Europe

Shan presents regularly for a major training company, at IFRS conferences in London and Zurich.

Valuation exercises under IFRS 2, Share-based payment

Shan has completed numerous IFRS 2 exercises for UK listed companies.  These have involved selecting and applying option pricing models, understanding the related performance conditions and determining the apportionment of profit or loss account charges across different accounting periods.

"Shan had some real exhaustive material on IFRS and I appreciate the efforts she had put in.  It was truly a masterclass."
